When in Rome
That is a saying I hear a lot. This mode of thought however requires one to then put aside perceptions and feelings that could help us and allow us to contribute when we are traveling or even cooperating on a business or Kubb level
Recently I was in Oregon and Washington traveling for business.
During this brief excursion I noticed how there are differences and similarities from the two coasts as I am sure there are also some from the Deep South to the Midwest .
What I did notice however is that many
Personalities and ways of behaving or speaking--colloquialisms can be related to driving
Yes as I was driving I realized I was driving as a New Yorker getting where
I have to go. I noticed a car certainly a local, no question an older model car not a young person in the seat just tooting along.
As I can up on them they moved over and allowed me to pass. This was something a good New York driver would do to keep the flow of traffic going.
Well i thought on this more and
More on my 2
Plus hour drive further
North. That person was not so focused on the destination, the rules of the road or getting everyone somewhee ..... They were just being nice!
It reminded me of arriving from my red eye the night previously where everyone was tired we are all
Connections and I get on them plane and it is like a party.....it seems everyone knows each other they are joking around and having a ball .... Pretty cool
Does this mean New Yorkers are not nice? No! That is a perception
But noticing these similarities can certainly help you when you are traveling and when you are in competition
Notice the other teams. Talk to them
Get to know them. Once you do this you
Can have a better understanding of their perspective
......then you can crush them
In a friendly way of course
Do not so as the Romans do
Respect what they do then do what you do
It's getting warmer very soon
Let's get out there and share our perspective
Listening to others can be a great thing for you to do, if you listen to the right person.
Choosing friends and choosing teammates is an important part of life and Kubb.
So let's go from there. Hanging with the right group of buddies is key. Hanging with the right people or person is key.
Do not waste time with those who won't validate your feelings or opinions. This is always your life.
If you are stuck and need a lift out .... Do it
Do not wait around feeling sorry for yourself. The time is always now. You can be the force of change in your world. Even when things are darkest or you feel the worst....remember that is an opportunity for you to change and grow.
The most powerful change comes when it is needed most.
Use your energy to clear the void push through and come through the other side with a vision, a goal and of course what we all seek .... happiness.
Every decision you make, take your time seek clarity then act. Being decisive and avoiding derision can be a strong force that helps push the will through the proper path.
Remember this is also for each baton throw. So many emotions and thoughts.
Clear your mind, take a breath and a step and throw.
You already know it's going to land in the right place.
A time for change a new year. Add more to your life by doing what is good for you. Get ready the year of the sheep is at hand. We will not be led we will be leaders.
I read somewhere that you had to name something in order to teach it. So here goes: competitive camaraderie
That defines Kubb at its finest point. For gentleman to give each other a hard time while still playing for fun while still trying your best.
We have done some research. Recently whilst playing some winter Kubb we determined it is much more likely for a team to win as a threesome than as a twosome.
You would think the more throws the better, right? Not true. The camaraderie of having that extra person bolsters the spirit and allows for more authentic and quality game play.
So, the results are in, wether it's winter spring or summer, the more who play with you, the better you will be.
Place your ego aside and enjoy.
Keep on Kubbing
"Ulf the quarrelsome"
The beginning of the winter season is a time for reflection and a time for re-emergence. As you let the belt loose and pack on those winter pounds stop yourself. This is not a time for hibernation, not a time to slow down. This is where your ancestors proved themselves and foraged for food. You need to be a forager go out, take stock, take an opponent. Play some kubb!
A friend of mine played last night in his work suit no gloves and won! He killed it, his mind bent on sublimation. He knew what he had to do. No feeling in his fingers but who cares? Ignore the pain. Feel the burn and by all means necessary never quit.
Winter is a time to shine to brightly burn out and blow everyone away.
Do not let this season become a fog that drags you back into your needless slumber.
Wake up and play. Tell your friends and remind them what it means to be alive.
Winning isn't everything
But steeling yourself when when the possibility is nigh is tough
This is what separates champions from winners
In the face of losing everything or winning it all
How will you act? Would you be focused? How to keep yourself calm? Crack jokes? Put blinders on? Remove yourself from all situations?
The key is to
Immerse yourself in the moment and let the forces of your will
Combine with your skill to overcome at any odds
Every moment, every breath every movement conversation and action means so
Much when the microscope is on you tearing apart your every move
Do not let that get to you
Overcome and achieve and by all mean win
Because as we all know it means everything when it does
As I sit here and reflect on this day I come to think if many things.
How lucky I am as a father, someone who is relatively healthy and gainfully employed.
This day brings out bouts of patriotism we have not seen since before that terrible day. I am proud of people for that and hope that this feeling carries on.
My hope is the even people not from New York, the area in PA or near DC also realize the seriousness of the impact it made on these areas.
We were attacked. So now what do we do? Hopefully we continue to be the relator or nations, the building blocks to a successful culture.
We cannot go backwards and should not. It is the duty if each and every one of us not to allow our stupid feelings or bad tempers or egoism to deter from the goal.
I challenge all of us to speak out against bigotry, sexism, racism and culture ism
Stand up when you see someone being mistreated. Speak up immediately, step in
For that is what the hundreds of people did that fateful day. The stepped up and laid there lives on the line for everyone.
Without knowing the culprit they spoke for all of us and said " F this you will not kill us all, you will not win"
And they did not. We are stronger than ever and we must continue to be. Personally, ethically and mentally.
Kubb, destroyer of yards and connector of nations.
When you connect with a neighbor on a mutual interest, you are fighting against the terrorist who think that people of our like-mindedness are evil.
Each time you laugh and speak of freedom (trust me many other countries have this and enjoy it as well) you are fighting against those who wish to control and destroy the values we have grown to cherish and respect.
Keep playing Kubb , keep speaking out
Keep on smiling
My respect to all those who have fought or have stood up or spoken out for what they believe In
It was an amazing day last Saturday when 12 teams made their appearance for the first east coast Kubb event.
We are thankfull for all of the support from our wives, families and friends, what a great day!
In the spirit of coming off of this awesome high of good times friends and fun, we wish to remind everyone we want to keep it up!
We want more tournaments, weekly leagues and most of all, the spreading of the word about Kubb to any and all that value one if a kind experiences with friends and family
It is very exciting, but we cannot do this alone. Our friends and family are behind us and that is truly energizing
Let's all remember the truly important things in life and fill ourselves up with it
School is starting soon and we will all soon be really busy. Do not forget to carve out some time for what truly makes your ticker tick. Wake up early, stay up late, whatever it takes
We will do our best to provide some good KUBB it is up to you to do the rest!
Stay tuned and keep in touch
There is a lot more to practice than just training. Many visualize or speak in the mirror about what they will accomplish.
Of course practice makes perfect. But as my wrestling coach Tom Lamomica used to say "Perfect practice makes perfect"
Tom knew there was no way anybody was perfect, but it is something to strive for, a reason to stay focused. An unattainable goal that you must reach.
Kubb is able to teach you this. You will never hit All of the baselines in one shot each time. The odds are way stacked against you. However you must practice like this will happen, that you can be perfect.
This way your muscles remember to be perfect, to have the perfect swing and stride when throwing. There will always be different circumstances when you are playing: it could be location, sounds, smells how your day was, anything
Please remember with this tournament coming up it is in a new location and you still need to be perfect.
As perfect as you can be.
Train like a Viking. Mental. Physical. Perfection
Many times we sit back and reflect on how our life is going. When you do this. Be sure to remind yourself this: it is all perspective. You may think one thing going very badly in your life but really it is something you need to take control. Take back the will. Take back the drive, a sense of accomplishment. Little things. Big things. The main reason you are here.
Focus. Take time to remember what it was or what it is like to be successful. Who determines this? Who determines your happiness.
Sometimes people are there for you. Sometimes they are not. It does not mean they do not care. Care for yourself.
Remember: it is you alone that can make a difference. Get up, stand up go for it. Take action.
Others will think whatever they wish to keep themselves complacent and happy.
Ignore this. Listen to yourself and be brave.
Bravery is at the heart if each obstacle you can overcome.
Do it, do it all with confidence and bravery
